Archdeacon David Monroe: Biography

From time to time, we will introduce to you the members of the clergy and other leaders from around the Diocese of the Mid-South.  It is our pleasure to introduce you to The Venerable David Monroe who serves a the Archdeacon of the Diocese of the Mid-South and as founding pastor of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Smyrna, GA.

The Venerable David Monroe was born in Atlanta in 1954 and lived in Chamblee and Ellijay. He was raised in the Episcopal Church and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior 1971. He graduated from Gilmer County High School in 1974.

At Young Harris College, David met the love of his life, Dianne Elizabeth. and the two were married in 1976. While in the Episcopal Church, David became a Licensed Eucharistic Minister and a Lay Reader. Father Monroe joined the Charismatic Episcopal Church in January 1993 and was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Randolph Adler on July 20 of that year.

Five days later, he founded Church of the Holy Trinity, the first CEC church in Georgia. He was ordained as a priest by Bishop Dale Howard on November 16, 1993.

In 1995 he served on an Apostolic Team to Central Africa and returned to Kenya and Uganda in 1998.

Father Monroe served as Canon Liturgist to Bishop John Holloway and continues to serve as a member of the Bishop’s Council.  He also serves on the National Working Group on Liturgy and was appointed in 2007 by Bishop David Epps as the Archdeacon of the Diocese of the Mid-South.

He has written and self-published three books: Lift Up Your Hearts (a guide to Prayer Book Worship), On Being a Deacon, and On Being a Priest.

At the request of Archbishop Adler, he rewrote the Rite II Eucharistic Prayer C.  He currently serves as Chair of the Standing Committee on Liturgy and Music for the Diocese of the Mid-South.

Father David’s passions are reading, gardening, cooking, teaching and liturgy.

He and Dianne have been married for 32 years and are extremely proud of their son, The Rev’d Father Micah Monroe, an Anglican priest, his wife Brenda, and their children, Olivia and Nicholas. They are also proud of their daughter, Becky Gibson, Retail Manager for Radio Shack. Her husband Jeff is a recruit for the Cobb County Police Department. They have one daughter, Payton.
